Playa Negra, 'Black Beach' in Spanish, is the name of the seaside village where Mario Lopez and his family live. It is a lush tropical seashore formed by the Arrecife volcano, separated by a mountain range and a dense rain forest jungle from the rest of the country. On these shores, Mario and his cousin Felipe have an encounter with a whale that changes their lives and sets them on their odyssey to the United States.
